The Change Group
By Sacha Zackariya, Co-Founder & CEO
Intrinsically I felt as a leader that I needed to be clear to our teams across Europe, the U.S. and Australasia in what I stood for and what values unite us. We employ 80 nationalities with just 600 team members. Hence I set about a process that lasted two years in writing and developing what makes us unique and what glues us all together. You can find this at the end of the story.
In the US you hear about racism and often it is related to skin colour. But when you employ 80 nationalities you quickly realize there are all kinds of racism.
I remember running our Estonian company living there for 2 years in 2002. The collapse of the USSR had resulted in a large number of the former invaders choosing to stay behind in Estonia and not return. In their search for a new identity, I regularly witnessed Russians being discriminated against in shops, in educational opportunities, and in employment. I made an active point of drawing a line in the sand and welcoming ethnic Russians and ethnic Estonians to work work together in our company and all being given the same opportunities to progress, no matter the past.
Just across the water around the same time, we had decided to introduce a bonus scheme for staff in Finland. When the local manager found out about our plans, he strongly disagreed saying "we are Finnish, of course we will all work hard, we don't need bonuses!" Nevertheless we chose to do so, against various advice, and against what our competitors were doing. Sales increased almost straight away and we learned quickly that not everything you hear about cultural differences is true!
I once gave a presentation with two colleagues to the senior management of a prestigious German airport. Several years after we had won the tender, the airport management knew me well enough to say openly: "Sacha, that initial meeting was the weirdest presentation we had ever seen. You, a half Sri Lankan / English man speaking German, accompanied by an Austrian director with very provincial accent, and an Irish/ English Londoner. We said to ourselves that either this mini United Nations team really could deliver or else it was all a joke. I am happy to say that you have not only delivered on your promises that day, but that you really live up to your international values."
